Dear BGPS families,
Welcome back! As we begin a new school year together, I want to thank you for being an essential part of our Battle Ground Public Schools community. It is an honor to serve as your superintendent and to partner with you in helping each and every student thrive.
As a proud graduate of this district, I know firsthand the difference our schools, staff, and families can make in the lives of young people. I was fortunate to have caring educators who believed in me during a difficult time in my life, and because of them, I built my career around three guiding principles that I carry with me today:
Focus on Students – Each and Every Child
Honesty and Feedback – It is the Breakfast of Champions
Personal Responsibility & High Expectations – For myself and those I lead
These principles guide my work, and they align closely with our district’s strategic plan, which reflects the voices of families, staff, community members, and our school board. Together, we are committed to creating:
A safe and caring environment, where every student feels seen and supported.
High-quality instruction that meets diverse learning needs.
A culture of collaboration and trust, built through transparency, communication, and community partnerships.
This year, you’ll see us continue to build connections with local organizations, service groups, and businesses, all with the goal of ensuring our schools reflect the needs and values of our community. You’ll also hear more about local levy funding, which supports programs, staffing, and opportunities for students. We’ll be working hard to share clear, transparent information so families can feel informed and engaged.
I am excited for all that this year holds. Thank you for entrusting us with your children, for your partnership, and for the many ways you support Battle Ground schools. Let’s lead with heart, listen with purpose, and work better together… for our students, for our families, and for our community.
Here’s to a meaningful, joyful, and successful school year ahead.
All the Best,
Shelly Whitten
Superintendent, Battle Ground Public Schools
