2021-22 School Year

Welcome Back!

My name is Travis Drake, principal at Laurin.  This is my 14th year as an administrator and the beginning of my fourth year at Laurin.  The majority of my experiences prior to Laurin was at Prairie High School, where I served as the principal for several years.  My wife is also in education (Director of Alternative Learning in Ridgefield), and our daughters are now in 9th and 11th grade at Columbia River High School.

There will be challenges that we will need to tackle together.  The first one that jumps out is the expectations around masks.  For some families, masks are the reason you feel safe sending your student to school; for others, wearing masks is causing you to think twice about sending your students to school.  As I type this, the guidance is that when students are inside their classroom, they need to wear a mask.  When they are outside, they can take the mask off.  Teachers will continue to give ‘mask breaks’ whenever a student asks.  We are a campus that doesn’t have any hallways and students spend most of their time, when they aren’t in class, outside.  This means there will be plenty of opportunities for students to remove their masks.

Laurin is a great school with amazing staff, students, and families.  At first glance you will notice the old building and the portables.  Behind the need for a new school you will find a community who supports each other and consistently puts the needs of the students first.  I tell students all of the time that I will be the first person in line to cheer their accomplishments and I will also be the first person in line to let them know they screwed up and encourage them to learn and move forward.  My hope is that when students leave our school they will feel prepared, empowered, and cared for.

None of us have ever said that we would love to go back in time to our middle school years.  It is a challenging time and one of the reasons I enjoy working at the middle school level is because I accept the role of being a support person during their middle school years.  We (staff and parents/guardians) need to partner for the purpose of supporting the kids.  It really is that simple.  I love our students, staff, and parents because it does genuinely feel like a partnership.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Travis Drake, Principal
